Brow Lift Surgery in Utah

A brow lift (also called a forehead lift) is a surgical procedure that raises sagging eyebrows and smooths forehead lines, restoring a refreshed, alert appearance to the upper face. Dr. John Bitner, a double board-certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon with more than 16 years of experience, performs brow lift surgery at his practice in Layton, Utah.

What is a Brow Lift?

A brow lift elevates the eyebrows to a more youthful position and softens the deep horizontal lines and frown lines of the forehead. Unlike eyelid surgery, which removes excess eyelid skin, a brow lift treats the source of upper-face aging: the descent of the brow itself.

The brow is often the first place aging shows. As the forehead tissues descend, the eyebrows flatten and drop, crowding the upper eyelids and creating a tired, heavy, or even stern expression that doesn’t match how you feel. Many patients compensate without realizing it — chronically raising their eyebrows, which etches deep horizontal lines into the forehead.

By repositioning the brow, Dr. Bitner opens the eye area, softens forehead creases, and restores the natural arch and expression of the upper face — without an over-lifted or surprised look.

Signs a Brow Lift May Be Right for You

The most common signs are eyebrows that sit low or flat, hooding over the upper eyelids, deep forehead lines, and a persistently tired or angry resting expression. A simple test: if gently lifting your brow with a fingertip in the mirror “fixes” the heaviness above your eyes, the brow — not the eyelid — is likely the cause.

You may be a good candidate if:

  • Your brows have flattened or descended, especially at the outer corners
  • Friends or family ask if you’re tired or upset when you feel neither
  • Hooded skin over your upper eyelids makes your eyes look smaller
  • Horizontal forehead lines or vertical frown lines (“the elevens”) have deepened
  • You are in good general health and a non-smoker (or willing to stop before surgery)

During your consultation, Dr. Bitner determines whether your concerns stem from the brow, the eyelids, or both — a distinction that changes the surgical plan entirely, and one a face-focused surgeon evaluates every day.

Brow Lift Techniques Dr. Bitner Performs

Dr. Bitner selects the brow lift technique based on your brow position, hairline, and degree of descent — from minimally invasive endoscopic approaches using small incisions hidden in the hair, to targeted lateral (temporal) lifts for the outer brow.

Endoscopic Brow Lift

Several small incisions concealed behind the hairline allow Dr. Bitner to release and elevate the entire brow using a tiny camera, with minimal scarring and a faster recovery. This is the most common approach for moderate brow descent.

Temporal (Lateral) Brow Lift

A focused lift of the outer third of the brow through short incisions hidden in the temple hair. Ideal for patients whose primary concern is outer-brow hooding, and often combined with eyelid surgery.

What to Expect: Consultation, Surgery, and Recovery

Brow lift surgery typically takes 1–2 hours, is performed in an accredited surgical facility, and involves about 7–10 days of social downtime. Most patients return to work within one to two weeks.

Brow Lift vs. Eyelid Surgery vs. Facelift: Which Do You Need?

A brow lift treats the upper third of the face (brows and forehead), eyelid surgery treats the eyelids themselves, and a facelift treats the lower two-thirds of the face and neck. Many patients benefit from combining procedures, but each solves a different problem.

Because these procedures address different regions, a brow lift is often combined with eyelid surgery — or performed alongside a facelift — in a single operation for a balanced, harmonious result. Dr. Bitner will give you an honest assessment of what you do and don’t need.

If gently lifting your brow in the mirror relieves the heaviness above your eyes, the brow is likely the cause and a brow lift is the answer. If excess skin sits on the eyelid itself, blepharoplasty may be right — and many patients benefit from both.

Not when performed correctly. An over-lifted look comes from raising the brow too high or too uniformly. Dr. Bitner restores the brow to its natural youthful position and arch, so you look refreshed — not startled.

Most patients return to work and social activities within 7–14 days. Swelling and bruising largely resolve in the first two weeks, while the final brow position settles over the following few months.

Yes. A brow lift addresses the upper third of the face, while a facelift addresses the lower face and neck, so the two are frequently combined in a single operation for balanced, comprehensive rejuvenation.

Brow lift results typically last 8–12 years. Technique, skin quality, sun protection, and lifestyle all influence longevity, and the brow remains higher than it would have been without surgery.
